Aquia District, Stafford Virginia

	2013 Leadership Conference

	"Bear Claw 05-13"

The Annual Bear Claw Leadership Conference is for both Boy Scouts and Adult Scouters who want to continue their Scouting leadership development. For the District Scouts, the purpose of this annual District event is to provide a bridge between Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST) and National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT). For District Scouters, it is an opportunity to take a guided deep-dive into Baden Powell’s Patrol Method - the better we understand the key and essential elements of Baden Powell's Scouting for Boys, the more our Troops will be living the Scout-led reality. Our Adult Staff is comprised of almost entirely Wood Badge beaded Scouters. (To learn more about Wood Badge visit: http://www.boyscouts-ncac.org/wood-badge/16143)

Bear Claw, an entirely Scout-led Conference, is a place outside the Troop where Scouts can meet and learn from other Aquia District Scouts in a way that is designed to wholly reinforce the lessons their Scoutmasters (SM) are teaching, especially about key skills that make the Patrol Method and EDGE work at the Patrol and Troop levels. Bear Claw is also used as a “bully pulpit” to promote attending Impeesa; it is important to note that the majority of the Bear Claw Youth Staff are Impeesa Graduates/Staff. (To learn more about Impeesa visit: http://www.boyscouts-ncac.org/impeesa-nylt/18907)

Every Scout Participant must have his SM’s approval to attend Bear Claw. An important part of the Bear Claw Leadership Conference is helping each Participant think through and complete a Goal Worksheet to identify specific, actionable ways that the Scouts are going to bring the leadership skills and lessons of Bear Claw back to their Patrols and Troops.

Key leadership skills covered in guided discussions called “Buzz Groups” include: Communications, Setting the Example, Effective Leadership Styles, Planning, Representing the Group and others. Participants are formed into Patrols with Staff Troop Guides (with a separate Patrol comprised of SPLs and aspiring SPLs), elect Patrol Leaders for the day, create their own Patrol names, cheers and flags and the Staff SPL conducts a mock PLC and Troop meeting. The SPL Patrol gets a chance to sit down with experienced, Wood Badge beaded Adult Scouters and discuss overcoming challenges to making the Patrol Method work at the Troop level. The PLC plans and conducts a closing campfire with Patrol and Staff skits, songs and cheers.

Application form to participate in the 2013 "Bear Claw 05-13" Aquia District Leadership Conference is located above under "Further Information".
