Cardinal McCarrick's Welcome

Cardinal McCarrick

OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP

ARCHDIOCESE OF WASHINGTON

5001 Eastern Avenue
Post Office Box 29260
Washington DC 20017

August 10, 2004

Dear Friends,

Evangelizing and empowering young people to live the Gospel is at the heart of Youth Ministry in the Archdiocese. As a key component of the Office of Youth Ministry/Catholic Youth Organization, the Catholic Committee on Scouting works hand in hand with parishes to develop our youth into faith-filled adults. Scouting is an important tool of comprehensive youth ministry offered within the parishes of the Archidiocese of Washington. Through the Religious Emblems Programs, Retreats, Vocations Awareness, and Service Project, young people are engaged in the ministry of the Church.

I compliment the dedication of the Catholic Committee on Scouting, Boy Scout, Girl Scout and Camp Fire Leaders and the many adult volunteers that coordinate scouting programs for the Archdiocese. Through your efforts scout programs assist youth in developing leadership skills. As Bishop, I have the opportunity to take part in many scouting activities and see the tremendous benefits that Scouting and Camp Fire provide our youth. It is my desire that participation in scouting be encouraged among as many of our Catholic youth as possible.

It is with pleasure that I present to you this year's scouting resource handbook. May the Lord assist each of you to carry out the principles of good scouting and to experience the joy of knowing and serving the Lord.

With every good wish, I am

Faithfully in Christ,

Theodore Cardinal McCarrick
Archbishop of Washington
