NCAC Strategic Plan 2011-2015

In 2011 the National Capital Area Council (NCAC) is celebrating its 100th anniversary. We continue to provide Scouting and leadership opportunities to the youth of the Nation’s capital region with an emphasis on character and value-based programs that allow young people to explore a wide range of programs – especially the outdoors – with a view to their potential personal development and contribution to the future of our Nation.

The Council boundaries run from Frederick, Maryland in our north, traveling through the District of Columbia down to Fredericksburg, Virginia in our south. In addition to the District of Columbia, there are six counties in Maryland and ten counties and six independent cities in Virginia.

Record numbers of traditional Scouts and in-school character education activities have been the norm, ending 2010 with more than 50,000 traditional Scouts and 10,000 youth participating in school based programs. Additionally, we are fortunate to have more than 24,000 adult volunteers helping to guide our wide range of programs. These impressive numbers put the National Capital Area Council at the top of its class, enjoying the coveted #1 ranking among similar councils in America.

As we celebrate our Council’s centennial anniversary, it’s an appropriate time to look forward to ensure we are properly positioned to continue our service to the ever-changing nature of our true customers, the youth of the greater National Capital Region. We do this through our ongoing efforts to maintain a long-range view through our strategic planning process. This plan recognizes and addresses the significant demographic shifts in our region and their cultural implications, the increasing opportunities (educational, sports, arts, etc.) afforded the youth we serve and thus the competition for their time, optimization of our facilities (especially Camps Goshen and Snyder), and financial security that ensures that funding is not a barrier to providing high quality programs and facilities.

The six pillars of our Strategic Plan provide the general direction to steer our Council over the next five years. They are aggressive and designed to ensure that we achieve our vision “To be recognized in our communities as providing the premier youth program of youth fitness, environmental stewardship, and values-based leadership.
