District Adult Awards and Recognition sub-committee (DASC)
District Advancement Committee

BSA provides for the recognition of adults who are involved in the Scouting program and demonstrate distinguished service to youth. These "Scouters" have similar opportunities as the youth to either earn or be recognized for their commitment to the scouting program. These awards are worn as knots over the left pocket on the official scout uniform. At the bottom of this page is a listing of the awards and their progress sheets.

Scroll down for details & the forms used to record achievement and participation.

District Outstanding Unit Scouter Award

Potomac District has the Outstanding Unit Scouter Award which is a unit level award that gives recognition to registered adult Scouters for their significant contributions to their respective units. The Outstanding Unit Scouter Award is a District award presented on behalf of units in the same way that the District Award of Merit is a Council award presented by the District, and the Silver Beaver Award is a National award presented by the Council.   Selections are due annually no later than late April/early May; watch the Flash for exact date.

District and Council Recognition

Recipients of the District Award of Merit (District level) and the Silver Beaver (Council level) are nominated and awarded these recognitions by the District Key 3 and the NCAC, respectively. The nominations are received by the Chairman of the Awards and Recognition sub-committee of the Potomac District Advancement & Recognition (YAR) Committee. They are due and should be submitted by December 31st. each year.

District Award of Merit

The District Award of Merit is a council award presented by districts in the same manner that the Silver Beaver is a national award presented by councils. The award is available to Scouters who render service of an outstanding nature at the district level. It is not appropriate to nominate a Scouter who has already received this award. A professional Scouter or other council employee may not receive this award based on employment service. However, a professional Scouter or employee who also serves as a volunteer Scouter may be eligible, based on volunteer service.

There are District Scouters who have given outstanding service to youth in our district and/or our community who you believe should receive the District Award of Merit (DOAM). Now is the time to give them the recognition they richly deserve!  Please take the time to nominate that deserving Scouter! The District Award of Merit is a council award presented at the district level to honor those who have given outstanding service at the district level.

The nomination form (PDF) with instructions is available by clicking here or you can go to the NCAC website. The form and the supporting information is due to us no later than December 31, of this year. Please contact Rick Kessel or Dick Holcomb at their contact information for additional guidance and instruction in completing this form.

Completed nomination forms for the DOAM award should be sent to Dick Holcomb via e-mail or hand deliver at Roundtable.

Silver Beaver

The Boy Scouts of America, acting through the National Court of Honor, may award the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to youth: ? (b) The award is made for noteworthy service of exceptional character to youth by registered Cub Scouters, Scouters, Varsity Scouters, and Venturing leaders within the territory under the jurisdiction of a local (NCAC) council. The Silver Beaver nomination (PDF) document is available by clicking here or you can go to the NCAC web page containing forms and documents. Please contact Rick Kessel at gfdadv@yahoo.com for additional guidance and instruction in completing this form.
