Boy Scout Leader Training

In order for a Boy Scout Leader (Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster) to be fully trained, they must have completed the following classes:

Youth Protection
Boy Scout Leader Fast Start
Boy Scout Leader Specific Training (BSLST)
Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS)

In order for a Boy Scout Leader (Troop Committee members) to be fully trained, they must have completed the following classes:

Youth Protection
Boy Scout Leader Fast Start
Troop Committee Challenge (TCC)

All Boy Scouts of America leadership training is a continuum.  That is, the classes are individual, based on the program area; i.e. Cub Scouts, Varsity, etc.  and each class builds on a previous one.  For Boy Scout unit leaders, the Leader specific course must be taken before the Outdoor course.

The Catoctin Mountain District Training Cmte offers training at several venues and at many times throughout the year.  We offer specific class sessions at the monthly RoundTable meeting.  We offer major training events two or more times each year where all training sessions are available and we offer special schedule training events upon request.

Regularly at the Monthly RoundTable, held on the second Tuesday of each month, we offer specific sessions of the BSLST.  Although the class is divided nto three parts, I, II and III and are scheduled individually, that schedule can be modified to fit the needs to the district leaders.  The sessions typically begin at 6:00 or 6:30p and last for the duration of the RoundTable, ending about 8:30, or so.  The schedule of offering is posted to the web and is presented in the Blue Blaze.  Please contact Damon Allen regarding RoundTable training opportunities.  Pre-Registration is REQUIRED.  At least one week of notice is required.  If the Cmte does not receive contact about leaders needing training, then the offering is canceled.

In addition to the monthly offerings, the CMT District Cmte offers Saturday training sessions where leaders can get both BSLST in full and TCC.  BSLST is a full day course, while TCC is a half day course.  The Saturday training events are typically offered twice each year; usually in March and September.  Summer sessions have been offered before.  The schedule of offering is posted to the web and is presented in the Blue Blaze.  Please contact Shawn Matlock regarding RoundTable training opportunities.  Pre-Registration is REQUIRED.  At least two weeks of notice is required.  If the Cmte does not receive contact about leaders needing training, then the offering is canceled.

Finally, The CMT District Leadership Training Cmte is committed to offering specially scheduled training to units.  However, although we ask for your coordination and commitment to the training schedule offered, we recognize that scheduling is more challenging today than ever before.  Please contact the District Cmte and provide us the opportunity to work with you and your unit to ensure that all leaders have training opportunities and satisfactorily complete the training as required.
