Pinewood Derby Rules for 2013

Schedule for 2013 Racing as follows:

Rank Check-in / Inspection Race Start
Tiger 8:00 – 8:45 9:00 AM
Wolf 9:00 – 9:45 10:00 AM
Bear 10:00 – 10:45 11:00 AM
Webelos 1 11:00 – 11:45 12:00 PM
Webelos 2 12:00 – 12:45 1:00 PM

NOTE: This schedule applies to both the Speed Competition and Design Competition.  A participating Cub Scout can check in his car only during his Rank’s designated check-in / Inspection time.

There are two competitions for the 2013 CBD PWD: Speed competition and a separate Design Competition. There will be first, second, and third place awards for each age group (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelo 1, and Webelo 2) for each competitions. The rules for the Speed competition are above. The two main rules for the CBD PWD Design competition are:

(1) Only work constructed predominantly by the Scout in the past year will be considered in the judging;

(2) The awards will be selected by a panel of independent judges. In contrast to awards for speed, which are based solely on quantitative performance measured precisely by computer, awards for design will be based on qualitative factors solely at the discretion of the judges. Since the point of these awards is to recognize the Scout’s creativity and craftsmanship, there are no preset criteria for the design awards. Some of the factors the judges may consider include creativity, originality, craftsmanship, painting, decoration, attractiveness, and humor.

Each Pack can send ONE scout per age group to the the CBD PWD Speed competition and up to TWO scouts per age group to the the CBD PWD Design competition. A Scout must pick one competition (Speed or Design) for the CBD Pinewood Derby as cars cannot be racing and judged for the design competition at the same time. Packs are welcome to send a runner up if a Scout must choose between the Speed and Design competition.

Cost per participant will be $5.  That will cover nice trophies for each age group’s winners plus a patch for every participant.  Please pay when you arrive.   The Cubmaster or Pack Committee Chair, or their designee should sign up his Pack’s representatives by Tuesday February 26 so that names can be added to the many heats required for each age group.   Again, payment can be made, by the Pack, at the event.

Each Pack that registers will be required to supply adult support in one of several areas for four of the six hours.

As you register your Pack, you will NOT be required to have an entrant for every age group or for both speed and design, although you may enter a name in every category.    You may enter up to two names in the design category.   We will have trophys for the fasted three in every age group and the top two in design for each age group.

The registration process WILL require that you provide a name, email address, and job choice for one adult to assist.   If you have more than one person sharing the four hour stint, you could either enter a couple names on one line, or enter one name to serve as volunteer coordinator for your Pack.
