Leadership Development 
A critical element of the Boy Scouting and Venturing programs is leadership development for youth. read below to discover the opportunities available to Boy Scouts and Venturers. Leadership Development for Boy Scouts Troop Leadership Training (TLT) TLT is the leadership training given primarily by the Scoutmaster and the senior patrol leader to all the youth leaders in their troop. ALL Boy Scout troops should conduct the TLT course with every leadership shift�whether it is when the youth get a new troop position or a patrol leadership role, or even when they welcome a new patrol member. The course has three one-hour modules that can be presented as individual one-hour sessions or as a combined three-hour block. What will the Scouts learn? At the end of Troop Leadership Training, all of the troop leaders will understand what is expected from them in their new leadership position. They will better understand the roles of each member of the leadership team (at the patrol and troop levels) and will learn to work toward a common vision of future success. Impeesa/National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) The NYLT course simulates a month in the life of a troop. It is a six-day course, usually held at a council camp or other outdoor setting. It reinforces and expands upon Be-Know-Do leadership. Scouts learn a number of leadership skills and concepts summarized on the memory tips card. The youth learn about the stages of team development and how to match the most appropriate leadership style with the developmental stage of the individual or team. The course has many challenges for the youths, including its culmination where they undergo a quest for the meaning of leadership, which they then present to the entire NYLT troop. What will the Scouts learn? The Scouts come away from their NYLT experience with exposure to the best of the best of leadership techniques. They have learned so many invaluable skills about how create a vision of success, how to set goals and make plans, how to listen and solve problems, and how to teach and lead. Most of all, they learn the bigger picture of how to put the needs of others first in order to be a truly great leader. They learn to use the Scout Oath and Law to make hard decisions and to remain true to Scouting�s values. More...... Youth Staff Development Course (YSDC) The Conference is designed for Scouters, Scouts, and professional staff who lead (or intend to lead) their Council�s National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) course �including Course Directors/Scoutmasters, Course Advisers, Staff Advisers, course Senior Patrol Leaders, ASPL�s, and candidates for each of these positions. It�s also for key Training Committee people in your Council. The program is fast-paced, involving, with interactive sessions on key subjects ranging from promotions to program features, grub to gamesmanship, finance to fun, staff development to sustaining enrollment, camperships to campfires. We�ll also have several sessions to address specific issues you may have in your own Council. And, we�ll have sessions for Council startups. In short, everything you could want to know about starting or improving your Council NYLT program will be here! The staff for this Conference is top-flight, with deep experience, and drawn from across the Region. More...... National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) The mission of National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience is to provide Scouts with a Philmontbased wilderness encounter that motivates them to follow a life of helping others succeed based on the values expressed in the Scout Oath and Law. The Scouts experience such high-adventure activities as COPE, wilderness first aid, a high-level geocache hunt, conservation, Leave No Trace, and a search-and-rescue activity. This is complemented by learning the history and inspiration of the Philmont Scout Ranch as well as a personal journal that focuses on the Scout�s leadership skills. Philmont leadership is committed to making NAYLE a very special experience. The Scouts live in a patrol setting at Rocky Mountain Scout Camp where they use their leadership skills to resolve exciting and challenging backcountry situations. The week concludes with a closing challenge for each Scout to build upon the legacy of Waite Phillips, the benefactor of the Philmont Scout Ranch. What will the Scouts learn? More..... National Leadership Seminar (NLS) The National Leadership Seminar is a weekend conference on the skills and attributes of leadership. It is intended primarily to enhance the leadership skills of the Order of the Arrow�s key youth and adult members as they seek to improve their services to the Boy Scouts of America and the greater community. The weekend format is designed to complement the longer, more detailed Wood Badge and Junior Leadership Training Programs. Near the end of the seminar, participants make a contract with themselves to apply the skills studied in the seminar on projects in their lodge, council, and community. It is recommended that youth participants be at least 15 years of age or a lodge officer. Completion of the Lodge Leadership Development Course is desirable. The seminar is an intensive experience in learning about the nature of leadership and practicing some of the skills that a leader uses. While it is designed to be fun, the course challenges participants mentally as well. Participants should be developmentally, physically, and mentally prepared to actively engage in an exhausting, invigorating weekend. More......
Leadership Development for Venturers
Venturing Leadership Skills Course (VLSC) The Venturing Leadership Skills Course is the first step a Venturer encounters on his or her journey toward leadership development. This course is designed to be used by Advisors to teach leadership skills to all Venturers in the crew. It has nine leadership modules that begin with an activity and follow with a reflection. Completion of this course is a requirement for the Venturing Silver Award, and conducting the course is a requirement for the Venturing Advisor Award of Merit. More.... (PDF File) Kodiak Leadership and service to others are two key tenants of Venturing, the Boy Scouts of America�s fast growing teenage program. Combine these two elements and you get the concept of �the servant leader.� Servant leadership as a philosophy teaches that the leader works with and through a team to accomplish the mission. Rather than just talking about leadership, Venturing through the new Kodiak course, teaches usable, relevant leadership skills that every teen can use. Methods -
Challenging outdoor trek to use nature as a classroom (Not indoors). -
May be offered by a council, a district, or even a crew. Requires council approval. -
Team taught by two instructors per crew of 5-8. -
Only 5 leadership skills taught called Commissions. -
Can be offered as weeklong or two weekends. -
Uses hands-on learning approach with very short presentations. -
Constant reinforcement. -
Creates a leadership fraternity. Requirements -
Be at least 16 years old (May be lowered to 14 on less challenging courses.). -
Have physical capability for specific trek. - Have outdoor skills for specific trek.

More.... Kodiak X Kodiak X is the final step in Venturing's Nature of Leadership series. It began with learning introductory leadership skills in the Venturing Leadership Skills Course, followed by Kodiak, a much more in-depth leadership course done in conjunction with a trek or trip. Kodiak X is a weekend leadership challenge course designed to test a Venturer's leaderships skills learned in Kodiak. It is a fun and funky weekend! During the weekend, participants will review what they learned at Kodiak, and learn two additional commissions. These commissions are: - Evaluating Performance
