In addition to the Merit Badge Program, Webelos Activity Badges, Cub Scout Academics and Sports Program, and Venturing Ranger Award Electives there are a variety of specal opportunities that enable Scouts (and in some cases Adult Leaders) to peruse focused skills such as conservation or swimming. These special programs enhance advancement requirements and allow Scouts to build on skills they have learned through requirements, other activities, or recive recognition for a special act. Boardsailing BSA
This award has been developed to introduce Scout-age children to basic boardsailing skills, equipment, and safety precautions; to encourage the development of skills that promote fitness and safe aquatic recreation; and to lay a skill and knowledge foundation for those who will later participate in more advanced and demanding activities on the water. Boardsailing BSA is well suited as a program feature for older Scouts at summer camp.

BSA Lifeguard
So you've earned the Swimming, Lifesaving and Rowing merit badges. You love the water and want more. Here's how you can earn the BSA Lifeguard certificate:You must be at least 14 or have completed the eighth grade. -
You must be able to swim 400 yards using a number of strokes in good form. -
You must be able to demonstrate surface dives, floating and rowing skills. -
In addition to Swimming, Lifesaving and Rowing, you should have the First Aid merit badge. -
To complete BSA Lifeguard at camp, you must bring proof of current CPR certification from the Heart Association, American Red Cross or National Safety Council. BSA Lifeguard certification is good for three years. It can help you secure a job as a lifeguard and meets some of the requirements for the following Venturing awards: Outdoor Bronze, Ranger Award, Venturing Gold Award and Venturing Silver Award. To earn this certificate at camp, plan to spend at least three hours a day on the waterfront. In the morning, you will help teach other Scouts to swim. In the afternoon, you will lifeguard during free swims. BSA Lifeguard instruction also involves an hour of your time each day. Den Cheif Service Award
The den chief service award recognizes den chiefs who lead and serve their dens for at least 1 year. This award emphasizes your key role within Boy Scouting and compliments you for your important service.Click Here for Detailed Requirements
Emergency Preparedness Award The Emergency Preparedness Award is part of a new BSA program of emphasis for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, and Leaders, in cooperation with the Federal Department of Homeland Security. 50-Miler Award Overview The 50-Miler Award is presented to each qualifying individual for satisfactory participation in an approved trip. In order to qualify for the award the group of which the individual is a member must fulfill all of the following requirements. - Make complete and satisfactory plans for the trip, including the possibilities of advancement.
- Cover the trail or canoe or boat route of not less than 50 consecutive miles; take a minimum of 5 consecutive days to complete the trip without the aid of motors. (In some areas pack animals may be used.)
- During the time on the trail or waterway, complete a minimum of 10 hours each of group work on projects to improve the trail, springs, campsite, portage or area. If after checking with recognized authorities, it is not possible to complete 10 hours each of group work on the trail, a similar project may be done in the unit's home area ( There should be no unauthorized cutting of brush or timber.)
- Unit or tour leader must then file a 50-Miler Award application with the local council service center. This application gives additional details about planning the trip.

Historic Trails Award Love of America and devotion to our country depend upon a thorough appreciation of the ideals, principles, and traditions that have made our country strong. Historic Trails Award requirements emphasize cooperation between historic societies and Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, and Venturer units. Lifesaving and Meritorious Action Awards This recognition may be given to a member of the Boy Scouts of America�Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, Venturer, or adult leader�where the evidence presented to the National Court of Honor, in accordance with prescribed regulations, shows that he or she saved or attempted to save life under circumstances that indicate heroism and risk of his or her own life. The court will give consideration to resourcefulness and to demonstrated skill in rescue methods. Honor Medal With Crossed Palms. The Honor Medal With Crossed Palms may be awarded in exceptional cases to a youth member or adult leader who has demonstrated both unusual heroism and extraordinary skill or resourcefulness in saving or attempting to save life at extreme risk to self. Mile Swim BSA
Mile Swim, BSA is available to all scouts who have completed their First Class swimming requirements and have a BSA Swimmer classification. Mile swim, BSA also can be earned by adult scouters with a BSA Swimmer classification. It provides recognition to scouts and scouters who are able to swim 1 mile.
Paul Bunyan Woodsman
This award recognizes scouts who can demonstrate and teach proper woods-tools use.

Religious Emblems "A Scout is reverent." All Scouts show this by being faithful in their duty to God. Some go further and give special service. This can qualify them for a religious emblem. Such an emblem is not a Scouting award. It is conferred on a Scout by his religious leader. Each faith has its own requirements for earning its emblem. Listed below are the TIGER CUB, CUB SCOUT, AND WEBELOS SCOUT emblems and where to find out about them. Before writing or visiting your local council service center, check with your religious leader. Scuba BSA
Scuba BSA introduces qualified Boy Scout, Venturing, and registered adult participants to the special skills, equipment, and safety precautions associated with scuba diving, encourages aquatics activities that promote fitness and recreation, and provides a foundation for those who later will participate in more advanced underwater activity.The Scuba BSA experience contains two parts� Knowledge Development and Water Skills Development. During the first part, participants learn basic dive safety information and overview skills to be used during their water experience. The Water Skills Development session introduces essential dive skills, such as mask clearing, regulator clearing, and alternate air source use. The Scuba BSA program is conducted in clear, confined water by an instructor certified by diving organizations recognized by the BSA. Completion of Scuba BSA requirements sets the stage for additional training, but does not qualify the participant to dive independently, either in confined water or open water environments. Snorkeling BSA
The Snorkeling, BSA, requirements have been developed to introduce Scoutage children to the special skills, equipment, and safety precautions associated with snorkeling; to encourage the development of aquatics skills that promote fitness and recreation; and to provide a solid skills and knowledge foundation for those who later will participate in more advanced underwater activity.
The individual completing the official requirements will receive a recognition card and swimsuit patch. The completed award application should be submitted to the local council service center by the counselor or unit leader.

Totin' Chip
The Totin Chip is both an award and contract in Boy Scouts of America that shows Scouts understand and agree to certain principles of using different tools with blades. It should be earned by any Scout who wishes to cary a tool with a blade.

William T. Hornaday Award for Distinguished Service in Conservation
This conservation awards program was initiated in 1914 by Dr. William T. Hornaday, then director of the New York Zoological Park, in an effort to inspire members of the Boy Scouts of America to work constructively for conservation. For 20 years the program was funded through Hornaday's Permanent Wildlife Protection Fund. Upon his death, the program was sponsored for 35 years by the New York Zoological Society and named in Hornaday's honor. The award is the oldest conservation award given in America.
