Eagle Scout Astronomer Opportunity – May 17
NESA is seeking an Eagle Scout Astronomer, ages 16 to 18, to take an expenses-paid trip to attend the Giant Magellan Telescope Mirror Firing Event, Aug. 24, 2013, at the University of Arizona in Tucson.. Candidates should have earned the Astronomy and Space Exploration merit badges and plan to pursue an education and career in astronomy.
The event is limited to 100 members of the Giant Magellan Telescope; a special invitation has been extended to a selected Eagle Scout. In addition to the mirror firing event, the Eagle Scout will take a tour of the Large Binocular Telescope, currently the world's most powerful telescope. The Giant Magellan Telescope will eventually outpower and outperform the LBT, but the LBT will remain a valuable instrument for years to come.
Eagle Scouts interested in being selected as the Eagle Scout Astronomer should submit an essay of no more than 250 words to NESA@scouting.org, with "Eagle Scout Astronomer" in the subject line, by midnight Central time, Friday, May 17. The essay should state why the candidate feels he should be selected for this experience.
