Safe Swim Defense/Safety Afloat Online Training
For over three quarters of a century, the Boy Scouts of America has worked to develop the character, citizenship, and personal fitness of America's youth — and to do it safely!  As a major youth-serving organization, the Boy Scouts of America has a unique opportunity to help protect the youth of our nation while participating in aquatic activities.

Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat Training are required to be updated every two years.

Philmont FIRST AID and CPR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED (Note – NEW REQUIREMENT – 2008)  changed from 2007

Philmont requires that at least one person, preferably two, (either an advisor or a youth participant) in each crew be currently certified in American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid or the equivalent* and CPR from the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross or the equivalent.  The American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid is a sixteen hour course designed to help in situations when help is not readily available.  Several hours may be required for Philmont staff to reach a remote backcountry location after a message is delivered to the nearest staffed camp. First aid and CPR training will result in proper and prompt attention being given to injuries and/or illnesses. You must present current certification cards upon check in to verify this requirement.

*Equivalent training can include instruction by ambulance or fire department personnel, community colleges or other organizations.  You must have a letter indicating length of training, topics covered and participant roster.

ASHI Wilderness First Aid course has been approved by Philmont.

Wilderness First Aid Training or ABC

by future Philmont advisor, Mike Townsend

Airway, Breathing, Circulatory Systems and Check the scene, Call for Help, Administer Care. These familiar mnemonics of First Aid are just a warm-up for what you'll cover in this course. With many hours of instruction and multiple LIVE scenarios, this course is well-designed to cover how to provide care when help is delayed.

When they told us, “WE”, were 911, I should have known what I was in for…This course is intense! It covered many aspects of rendering care as the first on a scene. There is nothing like responding to a live patient or neglecting to cover a certain angle when delivering aid. What a lesson to learn!?

This is a great class to enable one to be better prepared  mentally with skills to deliver aid to those in need. Required or not, this course is well designed to help you be better equipped to properly respond. Be Prepared, and consider this course for your training development!
