I love this time of year. Days are getting longer and warmer…and Scouting thoughts turn to summer camp.
Every year our properties - Camp William B. Snyder in Haymarket and Goshen Scout Reservation outside Lexington – welcome young people with the promise of outdoor adventure, the opportunity to make new friends and the chance to earn merit badges that require a little help from Mother Nature. Summer camp is one of the greatest experiences a Scout can have and it’s one of the memories that Scouting alums are always willing to share.
I hope you and your Scouts have a fantastic time – safe and fun – no matter where your Scouting adventures take you this summer. And don’t forget to share your camping stories and pictures on our Facebook page!
Prepared. For the Future. As April drew to a close, NCAC held its annual Spring Endowment Celebration, recognizing the newest donors to the Council’s endowment fund. We added more than a dozen James E. West Fellows and welcomed three new members into the Second Century Society. These financial gifts will help ensure that Scouting is a viable option for local young people for years to come. To read more about why an endowment fund is so critical, visit www.BoyScouts-NCAC.org/Endowment.
New Leadership At the National Meeting later this month in Florida, Wayne Perry, CEO of Shotgun Creek Investments LLC (Bellevue, Washington), will become BSA’s 34th National President (Volunteer), replacing Rex Tillerson, chairman and CEO of Exxon Mobil Corporation. Wayne’s past Scouting roles include Western Region president and vice president; president of the Chief Seattle Council; district chairman; Explorer Advisor; Scoutmaster; Cubmaster; and merit badge counselor. During his tenure on the National Executive Board, he has served as president-elect; on the Finance Impact, International, Strategic Planning and Human Resources/Innovation and Research Group committees; and on the BSA National Foundation. Wayne has also served as international commissioner of the BSA and as a member of the World Scout Committee. His Scouting recognitions include the Silver Buffalo Award; Silver Antelope Award; Silver Beaver Award; Scoutmaster Award of Merit; Heroism Award; District Award of Merit; Wood Badge; Scouter’s Key; and World Scouting’s Bronze Wolf.
BSA Chief Scout Executive – and NCAC Excellence in Youth Leadership Keynote Speaker – Bob Mazzuca will also be stepping down this month. His successor is yet to be named, but these two key leadership changes remind us that succession planning is important to bring in fresh ideas and help keep dedicated leaders from getting burned out. It also helps ensure there is a continuity of organizational knowledge. As your unit plans next year’s program, spend some time discussing a leadership succession plan.
STEM The Space Shuttle Discovery may have made its final landing in the DC area, but BSA’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiative is just taking off! In keeping with Scouting’s new theme to help Scouts be “prepared for life,” STEM incorporates four educational elements that are critical job skills today’s youth – and America – will need to compete in the global marketplace. From Robotics to Inventing to Welding, there are more than two dozen merit badges that tie directly into the initiative now and, over the next couple years, new merit badges such as Programming, Game Design and Animation will become available. Every conceivable profession – teacher, astronaut, fireman, accountant, chef, interior designer, movie director…you name it – involves STEM principles. Incorporating this initiative into your unit’s program will help ensure today’s young people are truly equipped to be tomorrow’s leaders, no matter what career path they choose.
See you around the campfire, Les Baron Scout Executive/CEO

New Unit Spotlight
Crew 25, chartered by the Lovettsville Game Protection Association in Lovettsville, VA, was started by a group of young women looking for an experience that included service, outdoor activities and adventure beyond what they were being offered in other programs. Since many of the women are over 18 years of age, Venturing emerged as a great choice. The Crew members have completed basic Venturing training and plan to complete the Venturing Outdoor Bronze Award after their next camping trip this spring. They assisted Cub Scout Pack 962, chartered by the Lovettsville-Waterford Ruritans, with a recent conservation project and hope to conduct their first super activity - a major trip requiring long-range planning and extensive preparation - this summer. Goose Creek District's Venturing Forum Commissioner Ande Davis said she admires the energy of the Crew and their excitement about outdoorsy activities such as hiking, canoeing and camping.
