Mark Waugh Receives Medal of Merit and Eagle Scout Award
Mark Waugh with SM Dean Souleles, CC Russ Rieling
and his parents Nancy and Bill Waugh
The Boy Scouts of America National Court of Honor has awarded Mark Waugh the Medal of Merit for his quick action in applying the Heimlich maneuver to a choking fellow student.
While riding on a school bus in the afternoon of June 8, 2007, then Life Scout Mark Waugh observed a fellow student seated across the aisle gasping for air and exhibiting signs of choking. After determining that the student was indeed choking, Mark pulled him up to a standing position in order to perform a Heimlich Maneuver. This was made difficult by the narrow aisle and movement of the bus which had just turned onto a steep, winding road.
After Mark’s fifth or sixth thrust, the victim signaled that he had air flow again. He began vomiting and coughed up the object which had blocked his airway, a plastic ring from a water bottle. He resumed normal breathing. Potentially tragic results were avoided.
Mark’s Boy Scout first aid training and alert, speedy take-charge concern for a fellow student reflect the finest traditions of the Scouting Movement.
The son of Nancy and Bill Waugh, Mark was also awarded the Eagle Scout award on April 5th. Mark is a member of Troop 673 sponsored by the Methodist Men’s Club of Great Falls Methodist Church in Great Falls, Virginia.

59 Cub Scouts in a Battle of Wits in the Third Annual Akela Chess Classic!
On February 2 and 9 it was a battle of the minds as 59 Cub Scouts participated in the 2008 Akela Chess Classic! Pawns, knights, bishops, rooks, kings and queens were moving everywhere as Scouts in each rank competed in a five-round chess tournament for first, second, and third place honors. All competing Scouts were winners, displaying true sportsmanship throughout the tournament, as they made new friends at the start of each round and congratulated each other afterward on a hard fought game. Everyone had a wonderful time taking part, and all are looking forward to next year’s tournament. Is chess the best game ever? Check!
