 Appalachian Trail District Awards Your leaders can earn various awards ONLY if YOU make the effort to start the ball rolling. Recall in the Committee meeting when no one would take the role of Cubmaster or Scoutmaster orAdvisor? Someone finally stepped forward and undertook those responsibilites. Now it is your turn to give recognition to that individual. Overview ~~ The Appalachian Trail District has a number of different awards that can be presented. Presentations of awards are made at the annual District Recognition Dinner. While the Commissioner's Corps awards the Unit of the Year for Packs, Troops and Crews, individuals or Units may nominate leaders and volunteers for awards at the District or Council level. Additionally, there are some National BSA awards that may be awarded. Review the categories below and follow the links for specific award information. The criteria used by the Commissioner's Corps to select Units of the Year are provided below by unit type: Tools to help units identify JourneyToExcellece goals or to plan, monitor and evaluate their progress towards their JourneyToExcellence goals are available through the "JourneyToExcellence" menu option on the District's webpages. DISTRICT LEVEL AWARDS District Award of Merit - This is the highest honor that a District may bestow on a Scouter. Leaders involved at any level or in any program of Scouting are eligible for nomination. Recommendations are reviewed by a District Committee to determine who should be granted the award. White Blaze Award - One person is nominated by the Unit. A short paragraph discussing why the nominee should be given the award must be submitted to the Awards Committee by February 28th of the current year. The awardee is presented with a certificate acknowledging receipt of the award. Submissions may be made by e-mail to r_golling@yahoo.com with Subject title "White Blaze Nomination." Eagle Scout Scholarship - For Scouts who advanced to the Eagle rank during the scouting year, there is a scholarship for which they can apply. Must be a graduating Senior or college Freshman. COUNCIL LEVEL AWARDS Silver Beaver - The highest honor that a Council can bestow on a Scouter. Leaders at any level or working on any program in Scouting are eligible. Nominations are submitted to the local Council Committee for consideration and approval. PLEASE send a copy of your nomination or a note identifying your nominee to Rich Golling at r_golling@yahoo.com so the District is aware of potential awardees. James West Fellowship Award - This award is presented to individuals based on a contribution of $1000 or more to the local Council's West Fellowship Fund. Only registered Scouters or youth members receive and wear the square knot. The money may be given by a group of Scouters or individual Scouter to honor a fellow Scouter, as a memorial on the death of a Scouter or to recognize an achievement. The award can also be given to an individual who makes a contribution on his/her own behalf. NATIONAL LEVEL AWARDS Veterans Award - After 5 years of registered service in the Boy Scouts of America, an adult may, upon application, receive the designation of “Veteran.” The Adult must agree to live up to the Scouting obligations; to keep local Scouting authorities in the community in which residing informed as to availability for service; and further, to be as active in the promotion of the cause of Scouting as circumstances and conditions permit. The Veteran Award is an adult recognition. However, tenure earned as a youth may be included in the total number of years registered.
